You may not know this, but Your Pie is a pizza joint AND and a gelato parlor!
This marked our first foray into restaurants that also serve ice cream (or, in this case, gelato. For those who don’t know–as I didn’t–gelato is
the Italian regional variant of ice cream. As such, gelato is made with some of the same ingredients as most ice-creams around the world; milk (and cream), sugar (and other sweeteners), flavorings (fruits, nuts, essences, etc.) and air are the main ingredients….Like high-end ice cream, gelato generally has less than 55% air, resulting in a denser product….Traditionally, milk-based gelato originated in northern Italy, while the fruit and water-based sorbetto came from the warmer parts of southern Italy.
It occurred to me as we ate our gelato that one of the lines of demarcation for ice cream joints is: would you make a special trip for this ice cream/gelato/ice custard happiness? In my case, I’d definitely drive a good way if jonesing for Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy, but would only eat Your Pie gelato if I were already there to eat the (excellent) pizza.
Your pie is the Subway of pizza places; some people think this is a “great concept,” while some found the location “a little loud for a quiet ice cream treat,” but “great for dinner with a group if you don’t mind yelling over the music.” In general, the place is modern, clean and has ample seating for its size.
This rating must be qualified by noting that Your Pie offers a ROCKING 50% Military Discount, and…most of our crowd was from Army ROTC this time.
Vanilla, Tiramisu and Cappucino were favorites. Skip the Cookies & Cream.
VERY creamy, especially for something 93% fat-free. Come to think of it, that is AMAZING.
Impressive for a place that isn’t solely dedicated to ice cream, but of course it pales in comparison. “I miss blueberry and some other fruity flavors,” wrote one reviewer. They do, however, carry pistachio, mango, lemon, and other flavors you may not find in the local ice cream shops.
